The fear of being alone.

A relationship ends, you leave your job and suddenly it hits you: the fear of being alone. Well, that reaction is rooted very far back in our history. A time when we all still lived in caves. Then, being a member of a group was a lifesaving factor. If you had to fight a saber-toothed tiger, chances you survived in a group were not too bad. But if the tiger caught you on your own, running was the only option (see picture below – good luck to them both).

As a member of a group, the probability of your survival increased immensely and therefore you were more likely to create offspring. Good communication skills and teamwork were important to create secure relationships. These skills and the wish to be part of a group was passed on from generation to generation and over time it became part of our DNA. Even now, many centuries later, our body reacts when we leave a group or relationship. The oldest part of our brain is still frightened to be killed by a saber-toothed tiger. Although in modern society, we can be fairly sure this is not what is going to happen. So, try not to be afraid, life goes on!
